The Decant Guide

Fragrance decants: the smarter way to buy luxury perfume

Fragrance decants are small portions of a perfume or cologne transferred from a full-size bottle into a travel atomizer. Instead of paying for 100ml of a scent you have only smelled on a paper strip, you can wear it on your own skin for days and decide if it truly suits you.

At The Decant Club, every fragrance comes in three sizes: 2ml, 5ml and 10ml. That makes it easy to sample several designer and niche houses for less than the cost of one full bottle.

Why fragrance decants make sense

  • Try before you commit. A fragrance can smell very different after an hour on skin. Fragrance decants let you experience the full dry-down.
  • Build a rotation. Keep a fresh scent for summer, a warm one for winter and something special for evenings without filling a shelf with bottles.
  • Travel light. A 5ml or 10ml vial fits easily in a pocket, gym bag or carry-on.
  • Explore niche houses. Sample sought-after niche perfumes that are hard to find at the mall.

How to choose the right decant size

Start with a 2ml vial (about 30 sprays) when a fragrance is new to you. Choose 5ml (about 75 sprays) when you already like a scent and want to wear it for a few weeks. Pick 10ml (about 150 sprays) for a favorite you reach for every day.

Designer vs. niche fragrance decants

Designer fragrances come from fashion houses such as Dior, Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent. Niche fragrances come from perfume houses that focus only on scent, such as Creed, Parfums de Marly, Xerjoff and Initio.

Our fragrance decants cover both. Browse the designer collection and the niche collection, or shop by men's, women's and unisex scents.

How fragrance decants are made

Each decant is transferred from a full-size bottle into a glass atomizer and labeled with the fragrance name and size, so you get the same juice that is in the original bottle.

Fragrance families worth exploring

Most scents fall into a few broad families. Fresh scents lean on citrus, aquatic and green notes and feel clean and easy to wear in warm weather. Woody scents use cedar, sandalwood and vetiver for a dry, grounded feel that works well in the office.

Amber and oriental scents mix vanilla, resins and spices for a warm, rich trail that shines on cool evenings. Gourmand scents add sweet notes like tonka, caramel and coffee. Trying a small vial from each family is one of the quickest ways to learn what you actually enjoy wearing.

Getting the most from a small vial

Apply to pulse points such as the wrists, neck and chest, where warmth helps a scent project. Avoid rubbing your wrists together, which can flatten the top notes.

Keep notes on what you liked, how long it lasted and the compliments you received. After a few weeks you will have a clear short list of scents that deserve a full bottle, and you will know exactly why you picked them.

Tips for testing fragrance decants

Spray once on your wrist or neck and wait at least 30 minutes before you judge a scent. The first few minutes show the bright top notes, while the heart and base notes appear later.

Wear each fragrance for a full day, and try it in different weather. Many scents perform differently in heat and cold.

Store fragrance decants away from heat, humidity and direct sunlight to keep them smelling their best.
